Useful information
Cannabis oil is cannabis in a slightly liquid form, in which the active ingredient is highly concentrated.
This liquid form of cannabis is a food supplement, with the main ingredients coming from the cannabis plant.
Cannabis oil consists of a substance and a mixing substance. The substance is usually cannabidiol (CBD oil) or tetrahydrocannabinol (THC oil). The mixing agent is usually hemp seed oil.
Hemp seed oil is a vegetable cooking oil made from the seeds of the cannabis plant. Pure hemp seed oil does not contain cannabinoids such as CBD or THC.
The cannabis plant is a versatile plant that we also call hemp. For centuries this plant has been used in two ways:
- Industrial applications due to the strong fibres
- Recreational and medicinal use
Industrial applications
The use of hemp for making textiles goes back thousands of years. In Siberia and China in particular, clothing has been made from the strong fibers of hemp for many centuries.
In the Middle Ages, hemp also reached Europe. Seafaring nations used hemp to make large and sturdy sails.
Recreational and medicinal use
The internal use of cannabis is also centuries old. Excavations in both Egypt and China have sometimes found cannabis leaves and cannabis seeds next to very old mummies.
Cannabis is mentioned in ancient Indian scriptures for its medicinal properties. And archaeologists found remains of the cannabis plant in medieval herb gardens.
In the nineteenth century, pharmacists in Western countries sold cannabis-based remedies. That was the most normal thing in the world.
Cannabis prohibition leads to loss of knowledge
In 1938, certain countries in the world agreed to ban cannabis. This had happened under heavy pressure from the emerging world power America. As a result, cannabis extracts disappeared from the shelves of pharmacies.
Rick Simpson Oil
It would take about sixty years to rediscover how to make a cannabis extract. It was a stubborn Canadian who started making cannabis extracts to treat himself in the late XNUMXs. His name is Rick Simpson.
This self-medication was so successful that Rick Simpson decided to promote his product internationally. His cannabis extract soon got the name Rick Simpson Oil.
Invention cannabis oil
Rick Simpson Oil contains about 70% THC. That's very high. When the Dutchman Wernard Bruining once used Rick Simpson Oil, he got really high.
Wernard realized that dosing with such a high percentage is very difficult (one takes too much of the oil very quickly). Then he came up with the idea to dilute Rick Simpson Oil with a vegetable oil and named it medicinal cannabis oil. This is how cannabis oil as we know it today was created.
If the cannabis oil contains a higher THC percentage than 0,2%, it is also called cannabis oil or THC oil.
Cannabis oil with CBD
While enterprising types like Rick Simpson and Wernard Bruining dealt with the practicalities of cannabis oil production, scientists were busy exploring the biochemistry of cannabis. They discovered that cannabis contains a lot of other useful substances in addition to THC. They called these substances cannabinoids.
The substance cannabidiol (CBD) in particular turned out to be very promising. As more and more people discovered the medicinal potential of CBD, a new form of cannabis oil emerged: CBD oil. Major advantages of CBD oil are that you cannot get high from it and CBD oil is completely legal.
It has long been known that cannabis has a certain effect on the body. However, it took until the end of the twentieth century before people discovered exactly what happens in the body.
It was discovered in 1992 endocannabinoid system. For ease of reading, we abbreviate it below as ECS.
How does the ECS work?
The ECS primarily consists of the CB1 and CB2 receptors. Cannabinoids such as CBD and THC attach to these receptors. This initiates a biochemical process that affects other body systems such as the immune system, brain, nervous system, muscles and skin.
It does matter which cannabinoid it concerns. THC attaches to CB1 receptors located mainly in the brain and nervous system. This makes THC oil suitable for use, for example:
- Painkiller
- mood enhancer
- sleeping aid
- Appetite stimulant
CBD attaches to both the CB1 and CB2 receptors, but this substance does so in a different way than THC. That is why you cannot get high from CBD oil.
CB2 receptors are located everywhere in the body. For this reason, CBD affects many more body systems than THC. CBD oil is very suitable for:
- Strengthening immune system
- Restore muscle mass after exercise
- Prevent muscle aches and other physical pains
- Soothe and repair inflamed skin
- Improve motor skills
- Influence pain perception
In addition to THC and CBD, there are about 120 other cannabinoids such as: cannabigerol (CBG), cannabichromene (CBC), cannabinol (CBN) and hexahydrocannabinol (HHC).
In the story above, we already mentioned a number of different types of cannabis oil. We list these again below, supplemented with other forms of cannabis oil.
Cannabis oil with THC:
- Rick Simpson Oil
- THC oil
Cannabis oil with CBD:
- CBD oil full spectrum
- CBD oil broad spectrum
- Water soluble CBD
Cannabis oil with other cannabinoids:
- CBG oil
- CBC oil
- CBN oil
- HHC oil
Hemp seed oil:
- Pure hemp seed oil
- Hemp seed oil with added CBD
Cannabis oil with THC
There are two forms of cannabis oil with THC:
Rick Simpson Oil
The most extreme is Rick Simpson Oil. With Rick Simpson Oil, the percentage of THC can be up to about 70%. Just a few drops will get you super high.
THC oil
Regular THC oil is cannabis extract mixed with a vegetable oil. Hemp seed oil is usually used for this. THC oil normally contains somewhere between 2% and 10% THC. With the right dosage you don't have to get high from this.
Cannabis oil with CBD
CBD oil usually contains between 2% and 25% CBD. Cannabis oil with CBD always contains less than 0,2% THC and is therefore completely legal.
There are roughly three different types of CBD oil:
CBD oil full spectrum
Another term for CBD oil Raw is CBD oil Full Spectrum. In addition to CBD, this product also contains other useful cannabinoids such as THC, CBG, CBC, CBN, HHC and the legally permitted percentage of THC of up to 0,2%.
CBD oil broad spectrum
CBD oil Pure contains only CBD and no other cannabinoids (so no THC).
CBD water soluble
The big advantage of CBD water soluble is that it has a much higher bioavailability. This means that your body absorbs a much larger part of the CBD present.
Cannabis oil with other cannabinoids
In principle, any possible cannabinoid could be used for cannabis oil. However, this is not always practical, as some cannabinoids are only found in very small amounts in hemp.
The following special forms of cannabis oil are commercially available:
- CBG oil
- CBC oil
- CBN oil
- HHC oil
Hemp Seed Oil
Finally, we also have hemp seed oil. This form of cannabis oil is a healthy and flavoursome ingredient for the kitchen.
Pure hemp seed oil
The seeds of the cannabis plant do not contain cannabinoids. Therefore, pure hemp seed oil does not contain CBD, THC, HHC, CBG, CBC, CBN or any other cannabinoid.
Hemp seed oil with CBD
Some hemp seed producers add CBD to their product afterwards. This way you kill two birds with one stone: good food and a healthy portion of CBD.
The legal status of cannabis oil depends on the type of cannabis oil and the regulations in the country where you are located.
Cannabis oil with THC
Products containing THC are in principle prohibited everywhere in the world. However, what is considered THC-containing may vary from country to country. Sometimes 0,05% THC is already illegal. Other countries apply a limit of 0,2%.
Some countries have an exception to the general ban on cannabis when there is a medical need. You can then legally buy THC oil with a doctor's prescription.
CBD oil and hemp seed oil
In most Western countries, CBD oil and hemp seed oil are in principle legal. However, there are also countries in the world where there are severe penalties for possession of any product made from cannabis. Sometimes it doesn't even matter that there is no THC in CBD oil or hemp seed oil.
Travel cannabis oil?
Every country has different regulations regarding cannabis products. And these rules can change quickly too.
That is why it is wise to never take cannabis oil with you when you travel. Even if certain forms of cannabis oil are allowed in a country. It is then better to purchase the desired product on the spot. Please familiarize yourself with the local regulations and cannabis policy beforehand. After all, prevention is better than cure.
The composition of cannabis oil depends on the ingredients used and the production process.
Ingredients used
Different basic ingredients are used for the different types of cannabis oil.
Cannabis oil with THC
Cannabis with a high percentage of THC is used to produce Rick Simpson Oil and THC oil.
Cannabis oil with CBD or other cannabinoids
Industrial hemp used to be used for the production of CBD oil, because it contains virtually no THC. Nowadays, hemp is specially grown for CBD oil.
Hemp Seed Oil
Hemp seed oil is made from hemp seeds. These seeds do not contain cannabinoids, but do contain other useful substances such as omega fatty acids, linoleic acids, vitamins and minerals.
Production processes
In addition to the ingredients, the production process also determines the composition of the end product. There are different production processes.
Warm extraction
In this production process, the coffee shop cannabis or CBD hemp is first soaked in ethanol. After some time, the cannabinoids separate from the hemp.
The mixture is then heated until the ethanol has completely evaporated. The heat breaks down some cannabinoids and converts others into CBD or THC.
The remaining cannabis extract is then mixed with hemp seed oil. The result is CBD oil or THC oil.
Cold extraction
By cold extraction we mean CO2 extraction. This does not involve heating. This means that all useful cannabinoids are retained. CO2 extraction is only used for the production of CBD oil.
For CO2 extraction, hemp is first placed in special pressure-resistant boilers. Then so much CO2 is added that a very high pressure is created in the boiler. This causes the gas to behave like a solvent. This extracts the cannabinoids from the hemp.
The gas is then released and the result is a concentrate with a high concentration of CBD and other cannabinoids.
Finally, this concentrate is mixed with hemp seed oil.
Pressing of seeds
Hemp seed oil is made by cold pressing the seeds of the hemp plant. Since there is no heating, all useful substances are preserved.
Hemp seed oil is a healthy seasoning. You use this product to give your dish extra flavor in a healthy way.
The other forms of cannabis oil should be seen as food supplements. You can compare it to vitamin and mineral pills.
There are different methods of taking cannabis oil: dripping, CBD capsules and mixing with food.
drip
Taking CBD oil and THC oil by drip is the most commonly used method of ingesting cannabis oil:
You drop a few drops under your tongue. Use a mirror to count properly. Then leave the cannabis oil in your mouth for about half a minute. Then swallow with a drink of water.
CBD capsules
In our webshop you will find a wide range of CBD products: CBD paste, CBD patches, CBD edibles, etc. After CBD oil, CBD capsules are without a doubt the most popular.
This is primarily due to the ease of use. No hassle with dripping, just swallow a CBD capsule with a drink of water and you're done.
Another advantage is that the tasteless casing only dissolves in the stomach. This means you will not be bothered by the bitter taste of cannabis oil.
Mixing with food
This method is mainly used for hemp seed oil. You can also mix CBD oil or THC oil with food, but that is not as effective. These products are really meant to drip.
Every person has a different body. It is therefore impossible for us to indicate what the right dose is for you. We can, however, give a guideline:
For children:
-CBD oil: 2,5% to 5% CBD.
-THC oil: Consult with your doctor before giving your child THC oil.
For adults:
-CBD oil: 10% CBD or higher.
-THC oil: 2,5% to 5% THC. Do you want a higher percentage of THC oil? Please consult your doctor first.
When you use CBD oil for the first time, your body must first get used to it. Therefore, always start with a low dose: take 2 drops twice a day for 2 weeks. If you do not notice any effect, you can then gradually increase the daily dose.
Finally, you should be careful when combining drugs with cannabis oil. And we do not recommend pregnant women to use cannabis oil. Too little is known about the effect of cannabis oil on the unborn fetus.
